This collection is divided into three periods: the writings of Donne’s feckless youth, prior to his marriage (Songs and Sonnets and the Elegies); the writings of his maturity, during his crisis of faith and conversion to Anglicanism (Holy Sonnets and the Anniversaries); and the writings of his old age, when he felt the steady approach of death (Devotions and the Nocturnal).
