18.   Note

In this glimpse of another, richer, more intoxicating world, always ahead of us, just out of reach, slipping through our fingers even as we grasp it, we recognise the poverty of the world in which, between its fleeing visits, we live out the days of our lives. Thus, all beauty contains within itself its opposite. This is not its negation, however, but its apotheosis: the recognition, decisive in itself, that nothing is ugly but we make it so; and that beauty, consequently, lies not in the object but in ourselves.
