14.   Note

When the short-lived co-sovereignty of Zeus and Hera was dissolved, and the latter became subservient to the former, patrilineal descent and succession discouraged further myth-making – at which point man entered the time of history. The goddess lives on, nevertheless, in her prime symbol, the moon, and in her human incarnation, the muse, in the love for whom she continues her reign over the poet.
